With the proliferation of data recording sensors in exploration, drilling, and production operations, the oil and gas industry has become a massive data intensive industry. Analyzing seismic and micro-seismic data, improving reservoir characterization and simulation, reducing drilling time and increasing drilling safety, optimization of the performance of production pumps, improved petrochemical asset management, improved logistics, and improved safety are among some of the applications of Data Analytics in the oil and gas industry. As the energy industry continues to rely on the increasing amount of diverse production and geological data (and the attendant increasing availability of big datasets), this Graduate Certificate represents the critical competencies an oil and gas engineer needs to compete and be successful in the energy industry.

Class Format

Graduate certificate courses are offered in a 100% ONLINE format. The program requires completion of nine semester credit hours of coursework and is available to degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students. The nine hours of coursework can be applied to either the petroleum engineering or mechanical engineering master's degree. The modular courses in this online program have been designed from the ground up to incorporate current best practices in online education. Courses are broken into small, manageable segments that are completed asynchronously by a cohort of students. Lessons may consist of case studies, short videos, group discussions, and experiential projects for students to apply new knowledge.

Tuition

Cost

Tuition is $3,750 per course plus fees for all students, regardless of location. In total, tuition is $11,250 plus fees. This tuition rate is subject to change.

Private Loans

Students enrolled in the Petroleum Engineering Data Analytics Graduate Certificate program are not eligible for financial aid. However, private loans may help cover the cost of tuition. Please note that the Office of Scholarships for Financial Aid is unable to recommend alternative lenders.

When applying, your loan lender will likely require a loan certification to verify enrollment and cost of attendance. This process usually takes 10 to 14 business days but can take longer during peak times, and certified loans will only disburse once all documents have been received by your lender. We encourage you to consider all financial options prior to applying for private loans.

Veterans Benefits

Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements

At UT Austin, admission decisions are made on a holistic basis. Applicants will be admitted based on the sum of their academic and professional accomplishments, not any single criterion.

Domestic Requirements

To qualify for our Petroleum Engineering Data Analytics Graduate Certificate program, applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering
  • A 3.0 GPA (recommended)*
  • Official transcripts from senior colleges attended prior to UT Austin
  • 12 months of industry-related experience (recommended)
  • Resume
  • Statement of purpose

*Conditional admission may be possible if your GPA is below 3.0.

International Requirements

In addition to meeting the domestic requirements, international applicants will need to submit:

Conditional Admission

Applicants who hold less than a 3.0 GPA may be recommended for conditional admission by the Admissions Committee (contingent on approval from the graduate dean) based on the overall strength of their application, including transcripts, test scores and experience. Conditional applicants should submit their application and materials under the same guidelines as all applicants, but should address any academic challenges that may have tarnished their GPA in their statement of purpose. This statement should also mention how applicants faced their challenges, or plan to face similar challenges in the future.

If the Admissions Committee decides in the student’s favor, the application is forwarded to the Graduate School for a final decision. Students who are granted conditional admission have conditions associated with their first semester as students, which typically entail earning no grade lower than 3.0, not dropping any classes or earning any incompletes and undergoing a review at the end of the semester to ensure satisfactory progress.

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted for fall and spring semesters. Please note applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Applicants, especially international students, are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Notice of an admission decision is typically sent about one month after application completion and only after all materials have been received. All materials are due by the application deadline. Please note that test scores may take up to three weeks to transmit to UT Austin.

PGE 383 Topic 66 Data Analytics and Geostatistics – 3 credit hrs

Explore subsurface data analytics and geostatistics, from fundamental probability and statistics, univariate and multivariate analysis, representative sampling, spatial characterization and modeling, and uncertainty management to decision-making in the presence of uncertainty.

PGE 383 Subsurface Machine Learning – 3 credit hrs

Explore the theory and practice of data analytics and machine learning for subsurface resource modeling. Examine fundamental probability and statistics; data preparation and feature engineering, inference (clustering, multidimensional scaling) and prediction (regression, naïve Bayes, decision trees, random forest, support vector machines and artificial neural nets); and model selection, training, testing, tuning, and validation.

PGE 383 High Performance Computing for Engineer – 3 credit hrs

Explore an introduction to the UNIX environment in a high-performance scientific computing context. Examine several import UNIX applications that can help users be more productive. Discuss the basic differences between various parallelization styles of computing, as well as how to utilize the application programming interfaces (APIs) in scientific applications.

Faculty

John Foster, Ph.D.

Before joining the UT PGE faculty in August of 2014, Dr. Foster was most recently a faculty member at UTSA and prior to that was a senior member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories where he worked for seven years. His research interests are in experimental and computational geomechanics and multi-scale modeling with applications to well completions, lost circulation, hydraulic fracturing, and anomalous flow in porous media. Additionally, he has interest in fundamental theoretical advancement of the peridynamic theory of solid mechanics.

Michael Pyrcz, Ph.D.

Dr. Pyrcz’s current research focusses on improving reservoir characterization and modeling for enhanced development planning, minimized environmental impact, stronger profitability and better utilization of valuable natural resources. He and his students work on reservoir modeling related problems of improved integration of geological concepts, modeling for unconventional plays, improved data integration, multiscale and multivariate modeling, machine learning, big data analytics, and optimal decision-making in the presence of uncertainty.
