Instructor Spotlight: Energy Consumption and Distribution Researcher Joshua D. Rhodes, Ph.D.

If you followed the news during Texas' snowpocalypse in February 2021, you probably heard explanations of what happened to the energy grid by Joshua D. Rhodes, Ph.D., a well-known energy educator and researcher specializing in residential smart grid applications.

TxEEE is thrilled that Rhodes is one of our instructors for the Introduction to Energy Technology and Policy course, Feb. 1-24, 2023.  Rhodes' educational background and innovative research on energy consumption offer a perfect backdrop for participants to learn about energy transitions and their impacts on our current systems. Rhodes is a research scientist at The University of Texas at Austin and a founding partner of IdeaSmiths LLC. His current work is in the smart grid and the bulk electricity system, including spatial system-level applications and impacts on energy efficiency, resource planning, distributed generation and storage. 

He is also interested in policy and the impacts that good policy can have on the efficiency of the micro and macro economy. Rhodes is a regular contributor to Forbes and is an Axios Expert Voice. He sits on the boards of the Texas Solar Energy Society and Pecan Street Inc. (Data Advisory Board). His academic degrees include a double bachelors in Mathematics and Economics from Stephen F. Austin State University, a master's in Computational Mathematics from Texas A&M University, a master's in Architectural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.

Rhodes has written 25+ publications and many op-eds on topics ranging from solar and wind effects on the coal industry to analyzing residential energy consumption. He has received five industry-recognized awards, such as Energy Innovation Challenge Winner. 

He works closely with the Webber Energy Group as a Graduate Research Assistant, conducts research at Pecan Street Inc, is a member ASHRAEASME and is an affiliate at IGERT
